Jorge J. Pérez

Born in Havana, 1987 · In the U.S. since 2011 · 100+ videos a year

My name is Jorge Javier Pérez, a Cuban photographer, videographer, and video editor based in Miami, Florida. My work moves between personal documentary projects and commercial visual production, with photography at the center of everything I do.

Hello, and welcome!

In 2011, I left Cuba and moved to the United States. Arriving in a new country, with a new language and an entirely different environment, became what I think of as “The Leap into the Void.” That experience profoundly influenced the way I see photography as a way of understanding place, identity, memory, and belonging.

Alongside my personal practice, I have developed extensive experience in commercial photography, visual content production, and post-production. My work includes portraiture, product and e-commerce photography, advertising, image retouching, and visual content for brands and marketing campaigns. I specialize in bringing an image from capture through its final presentation, with a strong understanding of lighting, composition, color, and detail. I also work extensively in video production and editing, creating commercial advertisements, product videos, interviews, instructional content, and digital marketing pieces. My experience includes producing content for social media and digital platforms as well as national television advertising. Working across both photography and motion allows me to approach visual projects from concept and production through editing, color, and final delivery.

I was born in Havana in 1987, in El Cerro, a neighborhood whose streets, architecture, and people would later become part of the visual language of my work. As a child, I spent countless hours drawing, developing an early fascination with composition, form, and light. That interest eventually led me to photography and, later, to the world of digital image-making and post-production.

Post-production is another important part of my practice. With extensive experience in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, as well as video editing and color workflows, I work with everything from high-end beauty and product retouching to image cleanup, compositing, color correction, and final image preparation. Whether I am photographing a personal project, creating images for a brand, producing a commercial, or refining an image in post-production, my approach remains rooted in the same principles: observation, craftsmanship, storytelling, and an attention to light and detail.

After many years behind the camera, photography remains my most sincere way of understanding the world around me. And while I have photographed many things, I still believe that the most important image is the next one.

My personal work explores these ideas through long-term documentary and photographic projects. Legacy in Stone documents José Martí busts across the United States, examining the presence of Cuban history and identity within the American landscape. Archivo Miami looks at my first decade in Miami through street photography, while The House of Red Slabs returns to the Havana neighborhood where I grew up, reflecting on transformation, memory, and the passage of time.

My formal training in photography began in Havana in 2008 through workshops in camera operation and the history of photography at the Photographic Club of Cuba. There, I discovered the work of photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, whose approaches to observation, everyday life, and the experience of being an outsider would remain important influences.
